Details

K2, often referred to as the "Savage Mountain," is one of the most formidable and renowned peaks in the world, standing at a breathtaking elevation of 8,611 meters (28,251 feet) above sea level. It is the second highest mountain on Earth, located in the Karakoram Range of the Himalayas along the border between Pakistan and China. K2's nickname, the "Savage Mountain," underscores its reputation for extreme difficulty and danger. Climbers face daunting challenges such as steep and icy slopes, unpredictable weather, avalanches, and crevasses. The mountain's sheer vertical relief and technical demands make it one of the most challenging and treacherous climbs in the world. The name "K2" is derived from its position in the Karakoram Range, where peaks were initially labeled with "K" followed by a number assigned in order of their discovery. K2 was first measured and identified as the second-highest peak in the world during the Great Trigonometric Survey of India in the mid-19th century. The first successful ascent of K2 was achieved in 1954 by an Italian team led by Ardito Desio. Since then, numerous expeditions have attempted to reach its summit, with varying degrees of success. K2's extreme conditions, combined with its breathtaking beauty and the allure of conquering the second-highest peak on Earth, continue to attract elite mountaineers from around the globe. Despite its immense challenges and dangers, K2 remains a sought-after destination for experienced climbers, offering a pinnacle of achievement in high-altitude mountaineering. It has earned a place of respect and fascination in the world of adventure and exploration.
